North Carolina’s First Fashion Week
By Mary Louise Sprague
September 3rd, 2021. I arrive early to the Creative Camp Studio.
My eyes dart around the room grasping to make eye contact with someone in charge. I am greeted by a woman in an all too memorable purple suit. As I make light conversation regarding my excitement for what lies ahead, I am escorted to the couch where I’ll be sitting for the remainder of the evening. Slowly people file in and find a seat. Some move with confidence, while others, like me, are unsure as to what the night holds.
The evening begins when the emcee quiets the crowd and begins by providing a brief introduction of NC Fashion week, a gracious thank you to the host, and an exuberant “are you ready?!” The show begins.
The first designer featured was Tess Wiegmann. Tess particularly caught my attention because she is an NC State graduate of the design school (go pack!). Furthermore, she is a prevalent graphic designer and fiber artist in the Triangle area. Featured in this runway show was her most recent knit collection. This collection was rooted in the idea of creating something structural out of seemingly nothing. Pictured below is one of my favorite pieces.
Following an impressive collection of hand-finished items by Ms. LaFare, there was an intermission. Outside we were greeted with a soulful saxophonist and a plethora of art vendors. Some vendors featured clothing that was shown in the show while others were simply local to the area. Through conversation with each vendor, they revealed their passion for art and love for North Carolina.
After venturing back inside, the next designer featured was Younique Designz. Younique Designz is founded by Tonique Renee and is created for people who have zero desire to fit in. My favorite piece from the collection shown was a strapless denim top worn by a stunning model. Following this collection were three more designers and the ever so talented Christian Moon on the saxophone.
Finishing out the evening was FK X AD. Founded by Feyi the fashion designer, FK X AD’s collection was full of depth and variety. Everything from a classic little black dress to a fringe denim jumpsuit, Feyi executed it flawlessly. Although, my favorite outfit was a colorful two-piece set as pictured below.
My words cannot begin to express the talent, love, and support that was felt during this event. Each artist and designer put their heart and soul into every small detail and it showed. It was truly an honor to be in their presence. Although this was North Carolina’s first fashion week, I predict this will not be the last. I am excited to see what the future of North Carolina fashion holds. I hope you will join me.
